Earlier this week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the shortlists for nine categories ahead of the upcoming 93rd Academy Awards.

Among those titles listed are five films selected for screening at next month’s 2021 Fargo Film Festival.

This isn’t the first time films selected for the Fargo Film Festival have also gained notoriety at the Oscars. Last year, at the 92nd Academy Awards, four Official Selections of the 2020 Fargo Film Festival were nominated, with Marshall Curry’s “The Neighbors’ Window” winning the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film. It won the Fargo Film Festival prize for Best Narrative Short.

The Fargo Film Festival films that have made the 93rd Academy Awards shortlists include:

ABORTION HELPLINE, THIS IS LISA
Directed by Barbara Attie, Janet Goldwater, and Mike Attie, this short documentary follows counselors at a Philadelphia abortion helpline. In this documentary, we learn how economic stigma and cruel legislation determine who has access to abortion.

BITTU
Directed by Karishma Dev Dube, this short film is about a fiercely independent young girl with a brilliantly foul tongue who always gets herself in trouble at school for defying authority.

COLETTE
Directed by Anthony Giacchino, this documentary short follows Colette, a 90-year-old woman reflecting on her youth fighting Nazis alongside her family.

FEELING THROUGH
Directed by Doug Roland, this short film is a coming of age story of the unlikely connection between a teen in need and a DeafBlind man.

KAPAEMAHU
Directed by Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, Dean Hamer, and Joe Wilson, this animated film is based on the long-hidden history of four healing stones on Waikiki Beach placed there as a tribute to four legendary mahu who first brought the healing arts to Hawaii.

The 2021 Fargo Film Festival will be a virtual event this year. Films chosen to screen will stream on Eventive between March 18-28.
