47th Telluride Film Festival Official Lineup

Shortly into the COVID-19 pandemic, all eyes in the film world were on the late-summer film festival season. The Telluride Film Festival has historically been the first stop on the awards circuit for films each season. Filmmakers, members of the press, and film fans flock to Telluride, Colorado, for a long weekend of film premieres before heading off to Toronto and Venice. This year, pulling off a hybrid in-person and virtual festival wasn’t feasible, which means Telluride is going the way of Cannes and canceling its festival for the first time in its history.

All celebrations are not off, however. Like the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride’s programmers have released the “official lineup” that would have made Telluride a major stop, once again, for films on their journey towards awards season.

Among the titles are several that also make up the Toronto and Venice lineups, like Francis Lee’s and Chloe Zhao’s highly-anticipated “Ammonite” and “Nomadland,” respectively. Roger Mitchell’s “The Duke,” starring Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent, would have held its world premiere at Telluride, as would have “Concrete Cowboy,” starring Idris Elba.

Telluride’s executive director Julie Huntsinger shared that many of the documentaries that make up Telluride’s official lineup were not selected for Toronto or Venice, which led the programming team to want to share the list to help celebrate the diversified voices chosen this year.

The lineup for Telluride is traditionally kept a secret until the day before the festival begins.

Along with the films chosen to compete (listed below), special ceremonies were to take place to honor Anthony Hopkins, Kate Winslet, and Chloe Zhao.
