‘Sound of Metal’ Leads the Nominations for the 68th Sound Editors Guild Awards

The Motion Picture Sound Editors Guild has announced the nominations for the 68th Golden Reel Awards, which celebrates achievements in sound editing. Sound editing is the creation, recording, or re-recording of sounds. Basically, it’s the work of the sound editors to create sounds for the films. Sound mixing, often seen as the opposite, but complementary tool in sound design, is matching and tweaking audio levels of sounds already recorded.

“Sound of Metal”, the story of a drummer who is losing his hearing, earned three nominations. The only other film to earn that many nominations this season is “News of the World”. Several films earned two nods, including “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Tenet”.

Before this year, the Golden Reel Awards were a great precursor to the Oscar for sound editing. This year, however, The Academy has combined the two sound categories into a single Best Sound category.

The 68th Golden Reel Awards will be presented during a virtual ceremony on April 16.
