Watchlist: 93rd Oscars Nominees

A total of 56 films (41 feature-length, 15 short subject) were nominated for the 93rd Academy Awards. Of those nominated, Netflix dominated all other studios with an impressive 35 nominations, the most for an individual studio in over a decade. Netflix’s “Mank” earned the most nominations for a single film, with 10 mentions, including a nod for Best Picture. “The Father”, “Judas and the Black Messiah”, “Minari”, “Nomadland”, “Sound of Metal”, and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” followed with six nominations each.

In a year and awards season with many of the country’s cinemas still closed due to the pandemic, at-home viewing has become a lucrative piece of the film distribution puzzle. In fact, this year’s Oscars have the unique distinction of being the most accessible Oscars in modern history, since most of the nominees are viewable on a major streaming platform or available in some sort of digital experience.
