Box Office Report: “Freaky” Wins Again
BY SCOTTIE KNOLLIN
With just $1.2 million in North America, Universal/Blumhouse’s “Freaky” won its second weekend in release. The low number is even more stark considering the body-swap horror comedy is playing at 2,507 locations.
The low box office numbers show a reluctance in film audiences to return to theaters as more and more cities and states add additional lockdown measures due to the ongoing pandemic. When “Freaky” debuted last weekend, there were roughly 3,400 cinemas open across the U.S. and Canada. This weekend, that number was just at 2,800.
Of the new films released this weekend, Gravitas Ventures’ “Vanguard”, starring Jackie Chan, barely registered, earning just $400,000. Noticeably, the film opened to $44 million in China back in September. TriStar Pictures’ wartime drama, “The Last Vermeer”, opened to $225,000.
Looking forward, Warner Bros. announced this week that “Wonder Woman 1984” would premiere simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO Max, meaning the only large-scale wide release left on the 2020 release calendar is Universal’s “The Croods: A New Age”, set to open for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
