Box Office Report: “Honest Thief” Earns First Place with $4m
BY SCOTTIE KNOLLIN
As a sign that the theatrical experience is once again sputtering out, thanks to the pandemic and lackluster titles being released, Liam Neeson-starrer “Honest Thief” opened in the top spot with just $3.7 million. It is among the lowest ticket sales to ever land a first place finish, when adjusting numbers for inflation.
Outside of new releases, Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” grossed $1.6 million for a domestic grand total of $50.6 million since it released nearly two months ago. Overseas, the film has performed better. In total, worldwide, the thriller has earned $333.9 million.
Though theaters in some cities and states are just now getting the green light to reopen, this weekend marks the second full weekend without Regal Cinema locations in operation and several large markets are still under restrictions, including Los Angeles and San Francisco.
While new releases struggle to find audiences, re-releases continue to surge, like this weekend’s haul from 1993’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” ($1.3 million) and “Hocus Pocus” ($765,000).
In limited release, specialty distributors, like IFC Films, are scraping by by also releasing their films on VOD in tandem with theatrical releases. This weekend, “Shithouse” earned $6,750 from 28 locations (or, $241 per location).
