Box Office Report: March 1, 2020
BY SCOTTIE KNOLLIN
Going into the weekend, Universal and Blumhouse already had a hit on its hands as The Invisible Man (#1) earned rave reviews and a hefty Thursday night opening. In fact, the horror reboot made back its $7 million budget and then some, becoming the number one for weekend along the way.
Horror films have multiple obstacles to face when opening to the masses. Generally, they do not earn big bucks, great reviews, and positive CinemaScores. Instead, it’s usually just one of the three. For The Invisible Man, the film earned positive reviews fomr most critics, $29 million at the domestic box office, and a very favorable B+ CinemaScore. It should continue to bode well over the next few weeks.
Sonic the Hedgehog (#2) continued to push the boundaries of video game adaptations. With $16 million over the weekend, the film has now earned over $128 million domestically. It is on par to become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.
FUNimation’s My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising (#4) earned a fourth place finish with $5.1 million.
In not so great news, Disney’s release of 20th Century’s The Call of the Wild (#3) fell 47% earning just $13.2 million. For a film that cost $135 million, it looks to end its run with around a $50 million deficit.
In limited release, Saint Frances (#42) brought in $16,150 from one theatre. It will continue to open wider and wider over the next few weeks.
Leaving the Top Ten this week are Best Picture-winner Parasite (#12), family adventure film Jumanji: The Next Level (#11), and romantic drama The Photograph (#15).
Opening next weekend is Disney/Pixar’s Onward, which is earing high praise, and the Ben Affleck-starrer The Way Back.
