101 Studios’ “The War with Grandpa”, starring Robert De Niro, unseated “Tenet” to end its opening weekend in first place. Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” has been in the top spot since its release seven weeks ago. In total, N”Tenet” has earned over $48 million, domestically, and over $323 million worldwide.

“The War with Grandpa” took in about $3.6 million to secure the first place. Its run is based on a market that still includes about 16% of regions still closed due to the pandemic, including all indoor cinemas in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. This weekend marked the first weekend of all of 536 U.S. locations closing indefinitely.

For its seventh week, “Tenet” had the benefit of continued IMAX locations. Nearly half of its box office haul was from premium large format locations.

Drive-in cinemas continue to perform really well. Four of the top ten locations for “Tenet” this weekend were drive-in locations, with Los Angeles’s Paramount Drive-In clocking in at the top. Locations in San Francisco, adn Grand Rapids also made the list.

Disney’s “Hocus Pocus” continued to perform well, become a sort-of pandemic hit with an additional $1.2 million. The 1993 Halloween cult favorite debuted in the top ten last weekend and looks to be sticking around for a while. The studio will have to count anything it gets as a win since it’s now decided to reschedule the remainder of its 2020 slate, with the exception of its upcoming Pixar animated film, “Soul”, which will debut on the Disney+ streaming service on Christmas Day.

The only big ticket item left to premiere this year is “Wonder Woman 1984”, that is unless it also moves to next year.
