In a typical year, the Gotham Awards, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project to celebrate American independent filmmaking, kick-off the awards season as the first ceremony. This year, instead of the usual live ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street in late November or early December, the Gotham Awards will be held as a hybrid live-virtual event in January.

Eligible films are independent projects released between January 2020 and February 2021. Films that were scheduled to be released theatrically, but had to be released via VOD or streaming, were also eligible. To qualify as an independent film, features must be over 70 minutes and have a budget of under $35 million. Films also must have been written, directed, and produced by a U.S. citizen (except for films qualifying for the Best International Feature category).

Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow”, a period drama released by A24, earned the most nominations of any film, including Best Feature. The recipients of the annual Gotham Actor Tributes, Director Tribute, and Industry Tribute will be announced at a later date.

The 30th Gotham Awards are Monday, January 11, 2021.
