The Oscars have confirmed the lists of films submitted for the Animated Feature, Documentary Feature, and International Feature categories. For the documentary category, a record number of films were submitted.

In announcing the titles, the Academy did share that several animated and documentary contenders have yet to fulfill their required qualifying release. This year’s eligibility period has been extended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each title must complete their qualifying release in advance of the voting dates.

27 animated films are eligible for Oscars this year, just shy of last year’s record of 32. Among the films that have qualified are Disney/Pixar’s “Soul” and Apple TV+’s “Wolfwalkers”. Both are considered near-frontrunners for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. To determine the five nominees, members of the short films and feature animation branch, plus other AMPAS members who opted-in to participate, will cast their ballots during the voting period, which begins March 5. In order to opt-in, non-branch voters must have watched half of the total submissions to vote.

For the Best Documentary Feature category, a record 238 docs are confirmed as contenders. The now-broken record was set in 2017 when 170 documentaries qualified. Members of the documentary branch will begin voting on February 1 to determine the 15-film shortlist, which will be announced on February 9. The branch will then shorten the shortlist to the five nominees for the category prior to member-wide voting.

This year’s Best International Feature submissions tied the record set last year when 93 countries submitted films for consideration. The Academy defines an international feature film as “a feature-length motion picture (more than 40 minutes) produced outside the United States with a predominantly (more than 50%) non-English dialogue track.” Among the nominees are first-time submissions from Lesotho, Sudan, and Suriname. Recently, the Academy’s board of governors voted to expand the International Feature shortlist from 10 to 15 films. For the first time in Academy history, members of all branches were invited to vote in the preliminary round of voting as long as they met the minimum viewing requirement. Voting for the shortlist will take place February 1 to February 5, with the 15 highest vote-getters being announced on February 9.

Nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced on March 15. The 93rd Oscars will take place Sunday, April 25.
