THE RENTAL

This week IFC Films released a trailer for the directorial debut of Dave Franco called “The Rental”. The trailer for the indie thriller begins with two couples checking into their vacation rental as the host creepily remarks about peeping toms. From there the four vacationers become increasingly paranoid about possible hidden cameras throughout the house. The terror continues when a masked figure begins chasing them around the property. Is it the slimy host? An inside job? Both? The cast includes Dan Stevens, Alison Brie, Sheila Vand, Jeremy Allen and Toby Huss. What looks like a pretty vanilla story about couples partying on vacation quickly escalates to horrific experience. “The Rental” is scheduled to be released in July.

CANDYMAN

Horror fans were served up quite the treat this week when a new trailer for Nia DaCosta’s “spiritual sequel” to “Candyman” was released. The music lulls you in with a slightly playful yet ultimately sinister tone. Paper shadow puppets show someone painting portrayals of past injustices against African Americans, including the events that led to the creation of “Candyman”. The cast for the film includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Kyle Kaminsky and Vanessa Williams. The original “Candyman”, Tony Todd, is also included in the cast and will surely bring back past nightmares from the 1992 film. Director Nia DaCosta shared the trailer on Twitter saying, “Candyman, at the intersection of white violence and black pain, is about unwilling martyrs. The people they were, the symbols we turn them into, the monsters we are told they must have been.” “Candyman” will be released in theaters September 25th.

PALM SPRINGS

Hulu released a trailer for their fresh take on the romcom this week called “Palm Springs”. The film created immense buzz when it was released at the Sundance Film Festival this year. What starts out like a typical romantic comedy turns into an infinite time loop romp that looks quite funny. Andy Samberg stars as a beach bum character who is stuck repeating the same day in paradise. When Cristin Milioti’s character follows him into a cave on the beach emitting a strange light, she too is stuck in the same loop. The two then spend their days wasting time trying to find meaning in what seems like a rather meaningless time loop. The rest of the cast includes J.K. Simmons, Meredith Hagner, Camila Mendes, Tyler Hoechlin and Peter Gallagher. This film looks like a hilarious, time-looping trip. I can’t wait to see this when it’s released on Hulu on July 10th.
