3rd NDFS Awards Dates Set; New Categories Added

The North Dakota Film Society will bestow its best-of prizes for the 2021 cinema season on Monday, January 17, 2022. Nominations will be announced the previous Monday, January 10, 2022.

To be eligible, a film must meet at least one of these three eligibility requirements:

  • Must be released in a cinema in Bismarck, Fargo, or Grand Forks between January 1 and December 31, 2021.

  • Must be released on a major streaming platform between January 1 and December 31, 2021.

  • Must qualify for the Academy Awards and made available to screen to members of NDFS between January 1 and December 31, 2021.

In addition to the confirmed dates, the 3rd NDFS Awards will include 4 new categories:

  • BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

  • BEST SOUND

  • BEST COSTUME DESIGN

  • BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING

With the addition of the new categories, the annual NDFS Awards celebrate achievements in film in 19 categories (previous winners noted in parenthesis):

  • BEST PICTURE (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood;” “Nomadland”)

  • BEST DIRECTOR (Bong Joon Ho, “Parasite;” Chloé Zhao, “Nomadland”)

  • BEST ACTRESS (Florence Pugh, “Midsommar;” Frances McDormand, “Nomadland”)

  • BEST ACTOR (Joaquin Phoenix, “Joker;” Riz Ahmed, “Sound of Metal”)

  • BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (Laura Dern, “Marriage Story;” Maria Bakalova, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”)

  • BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR (Willem Dafoe, “The Lighthouse;” Sacha Baron Cohen, “The Trial of the Chicago 7”)

  • BEST SCREENPLAY (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood;” “Promising Young Woman”)

  • BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY (“The Lighthouse;” “Nomadland”)

  • BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood;” “Mank”)

  • BEST FILM EDITING (“The Lighthouse;” “Nomadland”)

  • BEST VISUAL EFFECTS (new category)

  • BEST SOUND (new category)

  • BEST COSTUME DESIGN (new category)

  • BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING (new category)

  • BEST ORIGINAL SCORE (“Joker;” “Mank”)

  • BEST ORIGINAL SONG (Glasgow, “Wild Rose;” Wuhan Flu, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”)

  • BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE (“Parasite;” “And Then We Danced”)

  • BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE (“Honeyland;” “All In: The Fight for Democracy”)

  • BEST ANIMATED FEATURE (“I Lost My Body;” “Soul”)
