‘Mank’ and ‘Nomadland’ Among Cinematography Guild Nominees
BY SCOTTIE KNOLLIN
Five cinematographers are in the running for the top prize at the American Society of Cinematographers’s 35th ASC Awards. To be eligible, a film must have released over the past 14 months.
Among those nominated, Joshua James Richards (“Nomadland”) and Erik Messerschmidt (“Mank”) were expected. Richards, in particular, has nearly swept in the critics awards that make up the early part of awards season.
In addition to Richards and Messerschmidt, Phedon Papamichael (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”), Newton Thomas Sigel (“Cherry”), and Dariusz Wolski (“News of the World”) were cited for their work. Sigel’s nomination for “Cherry” is one of this awards season’s biggest surprises.
Last year, Roger Deakins, CBE, ASC, BSC received the ASC Award for “1917” before winning the Best Achievement in Cinematography Oscar.
Winners of the ASC Awards will be announced on April 18 during a virtual ceremony from the historic ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood.
