The American Society of Cinematographers’s 35th ASC Awards were celebrated this weekend during a virtual ceremony. To be eligible, a film must have released over the past 14 months.

Among those nominated, Joshua James Richards (“Nomadland”) and Erik Messerschmidt (“Mank”) were considered the two frontrunners, with many predicting this award would mark a continued awards season sweep for “Nomadland”. Instead, Messerschmidt picked up the top award for “Mank”.

Last year, Roger Deakins, CBE, ASC, BSC received the ASC Award for “1917” before winning the Best Achievement in Cinematography Oscar.

During the ceremony, Sofia Coppola was presented with the Board of Governors Award.

The ASC Awards were the last guild or society to hand out their prizes ahead of the 93rd Academy Awards.
