‘Sound of Metal’ Earns Top Honors at Sound Mixers Guild Awards
BY SCOTTIE KNOLLIN
The Cinema Audio Society, the guild for sound mixers, announced its annual awards this weekend during a virtual ceremony. The 57th CAS Awards honored “Sound of Metal” with its top prize, the award for outstanding sound mixing in a live action feature.
Traditionally, the winner of the CAS Award has a good chance of repeating the win at the Oscar. This year, however, the Academy has combined the sound mixing and sound editing categories into a singular Best Sound award. “Sound of Metal” is currently expected to win that award at this weekend’s Oscars.
In addition to the competitive categories, George Clooney was honored with the CAS Filmmaker Award. Seven-time Oscar=nominated sound mixer William B. Kaplan was presented with the Career Achievement Award. USC student Brandyn Johnson was given the CAS Student Recognition Award.
