The nominations for the 78th Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning by Golden Globes winners Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson. Though many of the season’s frontrunners were among the list of nominees, there were a few surprises and much to be celebrated.

The most notable category on the list of 25 categories is Best Director, Motion Picture, which resulted in three female directors being nominated: Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”), Regina King (“One Night in Miami”), and Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”). They join a very small list of female directors to have ever been nominated for the role, including the likes of Sofia Coppola, Jane Campion, and Ava DuVernay. It is looking more likely that the three could wind up as Oscar nominees, as well.

Among the nominees, most predictors will be surprised to see critics’ favorites like Paul Raci (“Sound of Metal”) and Youn Yuh-jung (“Minari”) left off the list of nominees. Plus, films like “Da 5 Bloods” and “Malcolm & Marie”, two Netflix titles expected to make major waves, wound up with zero nominations. Instead, “The Prom” earned multiple mentions, including a Supporting Actor nomination for James Corden, and Sia’s feature directorial debut, “Music”, earned nods for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, and Best Actress, Musical or Comedy for its star, Kate Hudson.

Of the films nominated, David Fincher’s “Mank” earned the most mentions with six, including Best Picture, Drama.

The 78th Golden Globe Awards will take place Sunday, February 28, in a bicoastal awards ceremony broadcast hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Fey will host live from the Rainbow Room in New York City, while Poehler will host live from the Beverly Hilton, the traditional home of the Golden Globe Awards. The awards will air on NBC at 7:00 p.m., CST.
