Box Office Report: “Freaky” Leads Mid-November
BY SCOTTIE KNOLLIN
Universal released its Blumhouse horror comedy, “Freaky”, nationwide, mostly due to its theatrical agreement with AMC Theaters. The film, directed by Christopher Landon, who created the “Happy Death Day” franchise, and stars Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton as a serial killer and teenage girl who swap bodies. “Freaky” earned $3.7 million in its opening weekend, below expectations but understandable considering new restrictions put in place in cities and states across the country still grappling with the pandemic.
Indoor cinemas in major markets, like Los Angeles and New York City, are still closed.
The weekend also saw NEON’s limited release of “Ammonite”, starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan. Playing in 280 theaters, the film earned $85,000. Just above that number was the Mel Gibson Santa Claus action flick, “Fatman”, which earned $108,000.
Netflix also released several titles in theaters before their streaming debuts, including “Hillbilly Elegy” and “Wolfwalkers”, but none of them landed in the Top Ten for the weekend.
The next major Hollywood release is “The Croods” sequel set for Thanksgiving weekend.
