Onward, Box Office Report

BY SCOTTIE KNOLLIN

Though it wasn’t the typical Disney/Pixar weekend, the duo studio animated flick “Onward” (#1) stil scraped up enough dough for a first place debut. Featuring the voices of Chris Pratt and Tom Holland, the fantasy adventure drew $40 million and an A- CinemaScore. The film’s opening marked the first time a Pixar film was released in the month of March, which could have played into its smaller debut. It’s also the first original Pixar film since “Coco,” showing audiences seemed to flock to the franchise pictures Disney has been pumping out in droves over recent years.

Overseas, “Onward” grossed $28 million, giving it a worldwide total of almost $70 million.

Warner Bros. released “The Way Back” (#3) across the country, earning $8.5 million along the way. Ben Affleck had received some of his best reviews ever for the drama. With a B CinemaScore, the adult-friendly film should continue to earn a decent run over the next few weeks.

Holdovers from past weeks, including “The Invisible Man” (#2) and “Sonic the Hedgehog” (#4) continued to perform well, as did Focus’s “Emma,” which expanded nationwide this weekend to over 1,550 theatres. The period comedy earned $6.9million.

In limited release, A24’s “First Cow” (#28) earned just shy of $100,000 from four theatres. The well-critiqued drama will continue expanding, making it to North Dakota in a few weeks.

Leaving the Top Ten this weekend are Oscar-winner “1917,” (#11) and horror flicks “Brahms: The Boy II” (#13) and “Fantasy Island.” (#14)

Next weekend, faith-based drama “I Still Believe” opens wide, “The Hunt” finally earns a release, and Vin Diesel will star in “Bloodshot,” an action film most have even to hear of.
