20th Fargo Film Festival Announces Schedule
BY SCOTTIE KNOLLIN
The 20th Fargo Film Festival opens March 17, 2020, showcasing four days of inspiring films at the historic Fargo Theatre in downtown Fargo. This year’s crop of films were chosen by panels with keen eyes for artistic achievement, diversity in filmmaking, and all-around best-in-show work. Category winners were announced in late 2019 and will be screened alongside other notable works from filmmakers around the world.
Tickets for the 2020 Fargo Film Festival go on sale at noon on Monday, February 24, 2020. See the Fargo Theatre’s box office for ticket pricing and to purchase passes for this year’s festival.
Announced last week, the festival will include several special events, including a screening of the documentary “Balkowitsch,” with special guests Shane Balkowitsch, Gregory DeSaye, and Chelsy Ciavarella. The film is the recipient of the 2020 Prairie Spirit Award and screens the same evening Balkowitsch’s much-discussed mural featuring Greta Thunberg will debut in downtown Fargo.
Sounds of the Criterion Collection is another special event, taking place Thursday, March 19th, at 7:00 p.m. Ryan Hullings will discuss his work on several landmark rock films, like “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Don’t Look Back.” He’ll also introduce the Criterion Collection’s audio restoration process.
Also announced last week, Tom Brandeau will receive the 2020 Ted M. Larson Award, given in recognition of an outstanding career in film production, film preservation, and/or film education. The Ted M. Larson Award is the festival’s highest honor. Brandeau, a Moorhead, MN, resident, is a graduate of the American Film Institute and acclaimed filmmaker. his films have been shown at several film festivals and Brandeau has received a number of prestigious awards, including a Regional Student Academy Award (“Whales, Ltd.”), Retirement Research National Media Award (“Sonny and Cornblatt”), Barry Levinson Arts Award (“Sonny and Cornblatt”), and the Rosebud Award (“Sonny and Cornblatt”).
