Weekly Must-Watch List: Fourth Edition

Y Tu Mama Tambien

THIS WEEK’S LIST CURATED BY ROB BURKE

A GHOST STORY
(Netflix)
Not for the ADHD or easily bored, this is the slowest movie I think I have ever watched....yet the most beautifully told. David Lowery's depiction of time through the pacing of scenes, letting them sit and visually carry the emotional setting, is amazingly unique and elegant. The sense of space and change through simple in-camera transitions had me rewinding to see how it was done more than once. He lets a scene live and breathe like none I've seen before.

TALES FROM THE LOOP
(Prime)
A big fan of the artist Simon Stalenhag, this series is very unique in that it is based on an artist's digit paintings. Meant to invoke the painting's sense of calm and simple life moments, the director has taken an approach to storytelling that goes against the grain of our present-day expectations of what we view - nostalgia, fast-paced, thrilling, playing on emotional fear, etc.

The cinematography is simple and beautiful, the CGI is organic and underplayed.

ABSTRACT
(Netflix)
Two seasons of artists describing how they create, what drives them to create, and how they view the world. This series beautifully tailors each episode to the style and feeling the highlighted artist presents. The incorporation of location, lighting, set, and graphic visualization of the topics the artists discuss, communicates a deeper sense of underlying topics they don't outright say. From Architecture to Hollywood wardrobe, there's a lot of experience and wisdom to be learned.

THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER
(Netflix)
Even if you don't love Emma Watson in Harry Potter or Logan Lerman in...well most of his movies, they play profound roles here. Writer/Director Stephen Chbosky carries the pacing, dialogue, and visuals throughout this to tell a deep-seated story of mental health, one that isn't talked about often.

6 UNDERGROUND
(Netflix)
Just kidding, Just kidding, I couldn't even get 2 minutes into this monstrosity when I was curious

TRIPLE FRONTIER
(Netflix)
A great cast and well-told action movie. I appreciate the subtler subplots in this story of greed, need, and desire, woven into an action movie.
